Vijay Diwas, observed annually on December 16, commemorates the Indian armed forces’ triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 war. On this day, India honors the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their nation.

The decisive victory on December 16, 1971, led to the establishment of Bangladesh following a 13-day conflict. General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, the Pakistani armed forces’ leader, surrendered with 93,000 soldiers to the combined forces of the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini of Bangladesh. This surrender marked the largest since World War II.

In Bangladesh, December 16 is celebrated as Bijoy Dibos or Victory Day.

India also observes Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26 to commemorate the 1999 victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War.
