CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Amidst what should be a joyous season, some face a stark contrast.

A National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) survey reveals a holiday downturn for those grappling with mental health challenges.

Atrium Health Psychologist, Dr. Russell Hancock, notes the heightened pressure of festive expectations. “The holiday season becomes a culmination of the entire year,” he emphasizes.

Conversations on mental health and depression intensify during this period, with large gatherings and constant change fueling anxiety.

Hancock underscores the misconception of expected emotions, stating, “There’s an expectation that people are supposed to feel a certain way.”

NAMI’s report exposes the holiday impact: 24% experience a significant worsening, while 40% note a somewhat adverse effect.

Dr. Hancock suggests proactive measures to assess mental well-being this season, urging realistic conversations about needs.

Streaming WCNC Charlotte on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or Apple TV is possible with the free app.

Hancock emphasizes the importance of checking on someone’s mental state without presuming a crisis. “Being realistic with people, asking what they need can be critical,” he adds.

For those contemplating self-harm or suicide, immediate assistance is accessible through the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 or online chat. Resources in North Carolina and South Carolina are available for support.
