Historic performance by Maruti in 2023: Sells over 2 million vehicles for the first time in a calendar year

Out of the 10 best-selling cars in India in CY23, seven were from Maruti.

Maruti Suzuki India achieved a historic sales milestone by surpassing the 2,000,000 unit mark in a calendar year (CY) for the first time in its history, reaching a cumulative volume of 2,066,219 units in 2023.

The company’s domestic passenger vehicle (PV) volume reached 1,707,668 units, and its commercial vehicle (CV) wholesales totaled 35,012 units.

Maruti’s sales to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), notably Toyota, amounted to 54,493 units in CY23. Additionally, the country’s largest carmaker achieved its highest-ever exports, reaching 269,046 units in CY23.

The company distributes passenger vehicles (PVs) through the Arena and Nexa channels. The Arena lineup includes popular models such as Alto K10, S-Presso, Celerio, WagonR, Eeco, Swift, Dzire, Brezza, and Ertiga. Meanwhile, the Nexa range comprises Ignis, Baleno, Ciaz, Fronx, Jimny, Grand Vitara, XL6, and Invicto. Additionally, Maruti Suzuki offers a single commercial vehicle (CV) – the Super Carry.

In the domestic market, Maruti witnessed an 8.35% year-on-year (y-o-y) increase in its PV volume, reaching 1,707,668 units in CY23, up from 1,576,025 units in CY22.

“Having achieved a slightly higher growth rate than the industry in the calendar year, our market share increased from 41.6% in CY22 to nearly 42% in CY23,” stated Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India.

Srivastava also highlighted the remarkable performance of Nexa, with sales surpassing 500,000 units in CY23, marking the brand’s highest-ever volume in a calendar year. Notably, Nexa experienced the fastest growth among brands in CY23, boasting a 53% increase.

Furthermore, Srivastava emphasized Maruti’s dominance in the market, revealing that seven out of the top 10 best-selling cars in India in CY23 belonged to the Maruti brand. The Swift secured the leading position as the highest-selling car with 203,500 units, while the Brezza claimed the top spot among SUVs, registering 170,600 units.
