“India witnessed a surge in Covid cases today, with 602 new infections reported alongside five additional fatalities, as confirmed by the Health Ministry on Wednesday. The current active cases stand at 4,440. The latest data, updated at 8 am, reveals two new fatalities in Kerala, and one each in Karnataka, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu.
In Kerala, a 66-year-old man, suffering from chronic liver disease, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, and sepsis, was among the deceased. Another casualty was a 79-year-old woman with coronary artery disease and sepsis.
The number of daily Covid cases had seen a decline until December 5, 2023, when they were in double digits. However, a resurgence has been observed due to the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.
Reflecting on the broader context, the pandemic, which began in early 2020, has witnessed over 4.5 crore infections and more than 5.3 lakh deaths in approximately four years across the country. On a positive note, the number of recoveries surpasses 4.4 crore, yielding a national recovery rate of 98.81%, according to the Ministry’s website.
The vaccination effort has been significant, with 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines administered in the country so far, as per the official records.”
