It has split headlights and cameras instead of mirrors.

After an unfortunate venture with the R8 E-Tron coupe, a sleek E-Tron GT sedan, and a series of Q crossovers, Audi has at last ventured into the realm of electric wagons. The anticipated model is likely to bear the name A6 Avant E-Tron, and the latest spy shots provide a comprehensive glimpse. The images capture a prototype in its final production stage, shedding much of its camouflage.

Nevertheless, remnants of body-colored tape persist at the front and rear, accompanied by subtle enhancements to the headlights. Embracing the contemporary trend of split headlights, the A6 Avant E-Tron takes inspiration from the Q6 E-Tron and the upcoming generation of the Q3, featuring dual layers of lights. In regions where regulations permit, the traditional mirrors will be replaced by innovative side cameras.

Audi has confirmed that the internal combustion engine (ICE) model will eventually transition to the A7 lineup, creating space for an electric-only A6 family. This strategy will also be applied to the A4 and A5 models. However, upon its debut next year, Audi’s inaugural electric wagon will face strong competition, especially from BMW, which is gearing up to introduce the i5 Touring in the coming months.

The A6 Avant E-Tron is set to be one of the early releases from the Volkswagen Group utilizing the PPE platform jointly developed by Audi and Porsche. It is expected to be followed by the Q6 E-Tron and an A6 E-Tron sedan/liftback, with the next-generation Macan also adopting the same platform.

Despite the electric push, Audi remains committed to traditional wagons with combustion engines. The A5 Avant, powered by gasoline/diesel, is slated for a 2024 release, coinciding with the arrival of a more performance-oriented RS6 Avant. Audi has assured customers that it will continue manufacturing internal combustion engine cars until 2033, with the last new models featuring conventional powertrains scheduled for launch in 2025.
