Many significant events unfolded in the year 2023, yet amidst the changes, the Fortuner’s continued reign in the full-size SUV segment remained unwavering. This narrative has persisted over the past few years, especially following the discontinuation of the Ford Endeavour. Looking ahead to 2024, while the dominance of the Fortuner is likely to persist, there are upcoming rivals slated for the year that could introduce new dynamics to the competition. In this article, we will delve into the prospective challengers to the Toyota Fortuner in the coming year.

Skoda Kodiaq

Last year, Skoda unveiled the all-new Kodiaq, representing a distinct philosophy compared to the Fortuner. The new-generation model is characterized by increased length, boasting an aggressive yet elegant design language at the front. The Kodiaq outshines the Fortuner, particularly in terms of interiors, featuring a revamped dashboard layout and a sizable 12.9-inch infotainment screen. Additional enhancements encompass powered front seats, a digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, and more. For the Indian market, the 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, already in use in the current Kodiaq, is anticipated. The launch of the new Kodiaq is expected in the second half of 2024, with an estimated starting price of around Rs 50 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

MG Gloster facelift

The Gloster has struggled to make a significant impact compared to the Fortuner. MG aims to address this by introducing updates to the Gloster in 2024. In December, the Gloster facelift was spotted testing for the first time. While the test mule didn’t reveal major details, noticeable changes included new tail lamps and a revised rear bumper. Anticipated enhancements encompass new alloys, headlights, and a front grille. Interior tweaks may include new upholstery and adjustments to the dashboard layout. As the Gloster is already highly equipped, it’s challenging to anticipate additional features for the facelift. The SUV will retain its 2.0-litre diesel and 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engines. Presently, the SUV is priced between Rs 47 lakh and Rs 53 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). However, a price increase can be expected for the facelift.

Upcoming Toyota Fortuner rivals – Nissan X-Trail

The X-Trail could emerge as a formidable competitor to the Fortuner, boasting a commanding design, substantial road presence, and a proven track record. However, Nissan’s limited market presence in India may pose a challenge. The X-Trail was showcased by Nissan in India in 2022 and has been spotted testing multiple times since then. Anticipated for a 2024 launch, the X-Trail showcases Nissan’s commitment to quality, featuring premium materials on all touchpoints and a range of features such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, driving modes, ADAS, panoramic sunroof, and more. The powertrain includes a single 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine available in three hybrid configurations. As for pricing, our estimate suggests the X-Trail could start from Rs 50 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
