Ayurveda emphasizes the crucial importance of eye care, considering them the most vital sense organs. Dr. Rekha Radhamony, an Ayurveda expert, highlights several common mistakes that can harm the eyes, whether done knowingly or unknowingly. Firstly, using warm water to wash the eyes, especially during winter, is discouraged as eyes are considered the seat of pitta (heat) and should be washed with room temperature or cold water. Additionally, the neglect of frequent blinking, a natural process that lubricates the eyes, is a common issue, particularly when engrossed in screen activities. Dr. Rekha suggests making a conscious effort to blink regularly.

Another mistake involves the overuse of artificial eye drops, with people often assuming they contribute to eye health. However, long-term use can lead to increased dryness, and Ayurveda recommends oil-based eye drops for sustained use. Using warm eye masks for sleeping is also discouraged, and individuals are advised to let their eyes breathe at night, opting for cold packs in cases of infections or styes instead. Lastly, Dr. Rekha strongly advises against rubbing the eyes, considering it “blasphemous” due to the thin protective layer of the conjunctiva. Instead, she recommends using cold water to wash the eyes when irritation occurs. In summary, these Ayurvedic principles emphasize the significance of proper eye care practices to maintain optimal eye health.
