Leopard Rescued in Pune: Female Cat Safely Recovered

Late Saturday night, a female leopard ventured into a residential area in Saandas, near Pune, prompting a collaborative rescue effort by the Pune forest department, RESQ Wildlife team, and the Lonikand police department. By 12:45 am, officials successfully and safely rescued the leopard.

The Lonikand police department played a crucial role in the operation by swiftly responding to the situation and implementing effective crowd control measures. Their efforts were instrumental in creating a safe and controlled environment for the rescue mission.

Tuhin Satarkar, director of wildlife management and drone pilot at RESQ Charitable Trust, highlighted the utilization of a thermal drone to enhance visibility and monitor the leopard’s movements. This technological tool played a pivotal role in strategizing and executing the rescue plan.

The rescue operation witnessed the coordinated efforts of various teams, including 15 members from the RESQ Wildlife Team, Pune forest department staff under the leadership of deputy conservator of forest Mahadev Mohite and range forest officer Suresh Varak. Additionally, the Lonikand police department contributed to the successful operation, with senior police inspector Kaingade leading their team. The collaborative endeavor showcased the effective coordination between wildlife organizations, law enforcement, and rescue teams to ensure the safe retrieval of the leopard from the residential area in Saandas.
