Tech giant announces new apps and connectivity support for Google built-in infotainment system and EV-specific updates for Android Auto.

At CES 2024, Google unveiled several enhancements for Android Auto and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) infotainment systems integrated with Google technology. The array of modifications encompasses the introduction of fresh applications for all systems with Google Integration, coupled with specialized updates for Electric Vehicle (EV) functionality within Android Auto.

Commencing with the Google Integrated system, the prominent technology company has introduced the beta version of the Chrome browser app on designated Volvo and Polestar vehicles. Anticipated for broader availability in the future, this application empowers users to browse the internet using the central touchscreen when the vehicle is stationary.

Regarding the user interface, Google Chrome adopts a design reminiscent of tablets and desktops. The screen showcases a top-positioned tab bar that facilitates concurrent exploration of multiple websites, a launch page for swift entry to favorites, and an integrated search box.

Google Maps will progress in its capability to observe an electric vehicle’s real-time state of charge and offer guidance on charging, end-of-trip charge levels, and more.

Google has additionally communicated that specific vehicle models will support video streaming from platforms like Crunchyroll, and The Weather Channel App will be accessible on Google systems. The weather application permits users to access hourly weather updates, receive weather alerts, and view real-time weather radar on the infotainment touchscreen.

The technology company has also stated that Google Built-In systems will facilitate the direct transfer of maps from the owner’s smartphone to the infotainment system. The firm has clarified that both Android and iOS devices will have access to this functionality.

Android Auto is also poised for enhancements, with a particular focus on electric vehicles. Scheduled for an initial release in the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning in the upcoming months, Android Auto will monitor and synchronize the vehicle’s ‘state of charge’ with Google Maps, providing estimates of the remaining charge at the end of a journey, recommending charge stops, and estimating charge times.

Google’s future plans encompass the introduction of digital car keys, with initial availability in select Volvo cars and intentions to integrate with more phone and car brands down the line. Through a digital car key, users can securely unlock, lock, and start their cars using supported Android phones, and the option to share keys with friends and family is also supported.
