Toyota upped the power, tweaked the chassis, and added an eight-speed automatic.
Toyota recently unveiled the refreshed GR Yaris just a couple of days ago. The car manufacturer enhanced its power, gave its styling a makeover, and introduced the possibility of an automatic transmission, marking a notable first. This seems like an excellent recipe for an enjoyable experience, and there’s already a fresh video showcasing the increased speed of the new model compared to its predecessor.
The GR Yaris retains Toyota’s 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, but now it boasts 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This represents an increase from the previous 268 hp and 272 lb-ft, and the evident boost in power is noteworthy.

The swiftest GR Yaris in this examination was the latest one equipped with the eight-speed automatic transmission. It achieved a quarter-mile time of 13.61 seconds. The recent Yaris fitted with the manual option accomplished it in 13.67 seconds; nevertheless, it hit 60 miles per hour first in 5.06 seconds. The automatic variant wasn’t far behind, achieving 60 in 5.1 increments.
Even though this wasn’t an exact comparison between the old and the new, the 2020 hatchback exhibited slower performance. It required a full six seconds to reach 60 and finished the quarter-mile in 14.12 seconds. While still commendable, it is undeniably inferior to the upgraded version.
Toyota implemented various enhancements to the Yaris, not just by introducing the new eight-speed torque-converter automatic, referred to as the Direct Automatic Transmission.
