The recall affects 1,39,790 Ford EcoSport and Focus models both of which have been discontinued in the US

  • The recall involves the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine on the EcoSport and Focus.
  • The recall affects 1,39,790 units.
  • A faulty belt tensioner may lead to loss of oil pressure that could damage or seize the engine.

While Ford is considering its re-entry into the Indian market, the EcoSport, previously a top-selling product in India, has faced a recall in the United States. The recall pertains to the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine in EcoSport models produced from 2018 to 2022, as well as the 2016-2018 Ford Focus, both of which are no longer available in the US. Approximately 1,39,790 units are impacted by this recall. According to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles experienced oil pressure issues due to a flaw in the oil pump drive belt tensioner arm.

Documents from the NHTSA specify that the problem is specifically linked to Ford EcoSport and Focus models equipped with the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol EcoBoost engine coupled with the 6F15 automatic transmission. The recall notice outlines that the belt tensioner arm might fracture because the retention caulk joint lacked the necessary strength to endure engine vibrations. This potential failure could result in the tensioner separating from the backing plate, leading to the degradation of the belt by losing teeth.

This could potentially result in a decrease in oil pressure, leading to potential damage and engine seizure. Ford has communicated that operators might encounter a reduction in both engine and braking capabilities, posing a potential risk of accidents. The automaker has acknowledged a reported crash attributable to this issue, resulting in injuries to two individuals. However, Ford has stated that it is not aware of any fatalities.

The recall is prompted by an inquiry from the NHTSA into around 2,50,000 EcoSport vehicles due to reports of engine malfunctions in models from 2018 to 2021. Ford’s EcoBoost engines have been under scrutiny since 2022 when the NHTSA initiated an investigation into Bronco issues in the United States.

According to the agency’s findings, the investigation has been expanded to include 7,00,000 Ford and Lincoln vehicles equipped with the 2.7-liter and 3.0-liter EcoBoost engines. These engines power various models, including the Ford Edge, Explorer, F-150, as well as the Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator in the United States.
