Under the watchful eyes of Pravin Amre, a former India batter and renowned batting coach, along with national selector Subrata Banerjee, Iyer, in preparation for the upcoming Test series against England, adhered to the advice from national selectors and the Indian team management by participating in this game.
Displaying patience and resilience in the first innings, Iyer faced a challenging test from the Andhra bowlers who employed negative tactics, ultimately edging one from Nitish Reddy. Despite his typically aggressive batting style, Iyer expressed satisfaction with his performance, emphasizing his commitment to attacking play regardless of the situation. With Mumbai securing an outright victory by 10 wickets, Iyer did not have the opportunity to bat in the second innings.
While acknowledging that the BKC Stadium conditions were not ideal for Test series preparation, given the lack of a vicious turning pitch, Iyer emphasized the importance of match fitness and staying on the field for extended periods, particularly after recovering from an injury. Playing a Ranji game after five years, he considered it valuable practice.
When questioned about his preference between playing the T20 series against Afghanistan and the Ranji game ahead of the Test series, Iyer focused on staying in the present and executing the plans he was given.
Regarding his frequently discussed vulnerability to short-pitched deliveries, Iyer expressed satisfaction with his preparation and emphasized the importance of taking one match at a time in the upcoming Test series.
