  • Annual production capacity of 3 lakh units

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) has initiated the production of passenger vehicles at its recently established facility in Sanand, Gujarat. This momentous occasion signifies a noteworthy achievement for the company and was joyously commemorated with the introduction of the inaugural car from this establishment – a Nexon sub-four-metre SUV, adorned in a vibrant Flame Red hue with a contrasting white roof.

The acquisition of the Sanand plant from Ford took place on January 10, 2023. Covering an expansive 460 acres, this facility represents Tata Motors’ second plant in Gujarat, designed for the production of both ICE and EV models. It accommodates four primary workshops, namely stamping, body construction, paint, and the final assembly shop.

With an annual manufacturing capacity of 300,000 units, expandable to 420,000 units over the same period, the facility has undergone significant retooling and technological upgrades. These enhancements involve the incorporation of a press shop featuring new dies for the stamping of crucial skin panels, the integration of additional robots, new grippers, and fixtures in the weld shop, as well as adjustments to handling systems, external robot programming, internal robotic painting, and the implementation of a waxing setup in the paint shop. Furthermore, there is also a modification of handling systems and end-of-line systems in the assembly shop.

Commenting on this milestone, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited and TPEM, expressed, “Witnessing the inaugural car roll out from the updated TPEM facility in Sanand is a moment of pride for us. We have successfully revamped the factory in a record time of 12 months, elevating it to a new level to accommodate a broad spectrum of existing products and future models. I express my sincere gratitude to the Government of Gujarat for its comprehensive support and our dedicated employees, without whom this achievement would not have been feasible. I am optimistic that this facility will play a crucial role in guiding Tata Motors, particularly TPEM, towards accomplishing new milestones.”
