The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has issued a notification stating that the JNU Students’ Union elections, pending for the last four years, will be conducted within eight weeks from the commencement of the academic session for PhD students on February 2. This decision follows the university’s announcement of the election dates hours after the JNU Students’ Union threatened to launch an agitation against the administration.

The notification specifies that the elections will take place between six to eight weeks from the start of the academic session for PhD students, beginning on February 2, 2024. The Office of the Dean of Students will release detailed guidelines for conducting the students’ union elections in due course.

Earlier in the day, the JNUSU had called for a ‘university strike’ on January 30, demanding the immediate notification of the students’ union elections. The union submitted a fresh memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit, urging the conduct of the elections and the revocation of the CPO manual and disciplinary actions against students.

Despite earlier representations and assurances, the union expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of written communication or response from the administration regarding the elections and other concerns. The students’ body had warned of a complete non-cooperation movement with the administration if the election notification was not released by February 2.

The elections in JNU have not been held for the past four years, with the last JNUSU election taking place in 2019.
