On a remarkable day of cricket, Hyderabad opener Tanmay Agarwal made history during the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy match against Arunachal Pradesh at the NFC Cricket Ground in Secunderabad. The 28-year-old cricketer’s performance was nothing short of extraordinary as Hyderabad concluded Day One with an imposing total of 529/1.

Tanmay Agarwal’s exceptional innings saw him smashing an unbeaten 323 runs off just 160 balls. His innings was peppered with an astounding 33 fours and an impressive 21 sixes, achieving a remarkable strike rate of 201.88. This strike rate is now recognized as the fourth-best among all batters who have scored at least 200 runs in a single innings. Furthermore, it stands as the highest strike rate by an Indian batsman in first-class cricket.

Notably, Tanmay Agarwal also etched his name in the record books by becoming the fastest cricketer to reach a triple century in first-class cricket. He achieved the milestone from 200 to 300 runs in just 28 deliveries, reaching the triple century mark in a mere 147 balls.

Hyderabad’s innings was marked by an explosive run rate of close to 11 runs per over. Tanmay’s opening partner, Rahul Singh Gahlaut, also contributed significantly with a blistering 185 runs off 105 balls. Together, they formed a formidable partnership of 449 runs for the first wicket, which ranks as the fifth-best by an Indian pair in first-class cricket.

Tanmay Agarwal’s innings was not only about massive boundaries but also about setting records. He is just four sixes away from breaking the record for the most sixes in a single first-class innings, currently held by New Zealand’s Colin Munro.

As Day Two approaches, Tanmay has the opportunity to set even more records. If he manages to reach 443 runs, he will surpass Bhausaheb Nimbalkar’s record for the highest first-class score by an Indian batsman, which stands at 443. The overall record of 501 runs in first-class cricket, held by Brian Lara since 1994, is also within reach.

In the match, Arunachal Pradesh initially posted a total of 172 runs in 39.4 overs, with Techi Doria being their top scorer with an unbeaten 97 runs off 127 balls. Hyderabad’s bowlers Chama Milind and Kartikeya Kak impressed, taking three wickets each.

The day’s play witnessed an incredible total of 701 runs being scored in just 87.4 overs, marking only the second instance of the 700-run mark being surpassed in a single day in first-class cricket. This also marks the first occurrence since 1950 where two sides combined to score over 700 runs in a single day’s play in the format.
