The Uttarakhand Waqf Board has announced that the story of Lord Ram will be incorporated into the new syllabus for madrasas affiliated with the board starting March this year. Shadab Shams, the Chairman of the Waqf Board and a BJP leader, stated that madrasa students will now learn about Lord Ram’s life alongside that of Prophet Mohammad.

Shams mentioned that this move has the support of seasoned Muslim clerics, emphasizing that the values represented by Lord Ram are universal and worth embracing by individuals of all religions. The Uttarakhand Waqf Board oversees 117 madrasas, and the proposed modern syllabus will first be implemented in districts including Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Nainital.

As part of the madrasa modernization program, the study of Lord Ram aims to highlight values such as sacrifice and commitment. Shams quoted 20th-century Muslim philosopher Allama Iqbal, stating that India is proud of the existence of Lord Ram and emphasizing that Indian Muslims should be educated about their country’s cultural icons. He also mentioned the introduction of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) books in madrasas.

Shams remarked, “Who wouldn’t want to have a son like Shri Ram,” while referring to Lord Ram’s sacrifice and commitment to his father’s wishes.

The decision to include Lord Ram’s story in the madrasa syllabus comes at a time when the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya took place on January 22. The event, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and prominent figures from various fields, marked a historic moment in the construction of the temple. The move by the Uttarakhand Waqf Board aligns with a broader effort to promote cultural inclusivity and understanding in education.
