Amid ongoing tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande emphasized the stability yet sensitivity of the situation. In an interview with ANI, he highlighted that over the past year, there haven’t been any new areas of friction between India and China.

General Pande underscored the significance of dialogue and engagement in resolving issues along the border. He mentioned that since April 2020, there have been 20 senior higher military commander meetings and 14 gatherings of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on China-India Border Affairs (WMCC). Through these discussions, efforts are underway to seek resolution.

India shares a 3,488 km border with China, spanning Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. The tensions escalated in May 2020 when Chinese troops attempted to alter the status quo on the LAC in eastern Ladakh. Subsequently, both sides fortified their positions near Patrolling Point 15, a notable friction point following the Galwan clash.

Regarding the Army’s readiness along the northern border, General Pande affirmed a robust and balanced deployment, with adequate reserves to address contingencies. He emphasized ongoing efforts in capability development, including the infusion of technology, modernization, and the introduction of advanced systems such as protected vehicles and surveillance drones. Additionally, the focus extends to infrastructure development, encompassing habitat improvement, forward connectivities to the LAC, and strategic road connectivity. Initiatives also involve extending power supply and enhancing communication, including the implementation of 5G technology for troops stationed in forward areas.

General Pande’s remarks underscore the comprehensive approach adopted by the Indian Army to ensure preparedness, address security challenges, and pursue diplomatic engagements aimed at achieving stability along the border with China.
