India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, reflected on the team’s performance following their narrow 28-run loss to England in the opening Test. Dravid identified a critical mistake during the match: the team’s failure to fully capitalize on their opportunities, particularly in the first innings, where they left valuable runs on the field despite making good starts. Despite a commendable effort from India’s spinners, who restricted England to 246 runs, the Indian batsmen, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja, helped India amass a substantial total of 436 runs in their first innings.

Dravid emphasized this point during the post-match press conference, highlighting the missed opportunity to secure a bigger lead in the first innings. He noted the absence of a substantial individual score, with none of the batsmen converting their starts into a century. Dravid lamented the fact that India seemed to have left around 70 to 80 runs behind in the first innings, a deficit that ultimately proved costly during the second innings chase.

He acknowledged the youthfulness of the current Test squad, many of whom are still learning the nuances of playing extended innings. Dravid praised their dedication and hard work, acknowledging the challenges of adapting to different playing conditions, especially given the prevalence of white-ball cricket in their schedules. He stressed the importance of constant improvement and the development of skills necessary to navigate challenging conditions more effectively.

Reflecting on England’s resurgence on Day 3, Dravid commended Ollie Pope’s exceptional batting display, particularly his adeptness at sweeping and reverse sweeping against quality bowling. Looking ahead to the second Test, Dravid emphasized the need for better execution and strategic planning to counter Pope’s aggressive approach and regain control of the match.

India will face England in the second Test at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Andhra Pradesh on February 2, where they will seek to rectify their shortcomings and bounce back with a strong performance.
