During the Republic Day parade in New Delhi, Gujarat’s tableau featuring the Dhordo tourism village has claimed the top spot in the people’s choice category, as revealed by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on January 30. Among the 25 tableaus presented by states, Union Territories, and ministries during the 75th Republic Day parade, Gujarat’s representation stood out.

Dhordo, a quaint village nestled in the Kachchh district of Gujarat, has gained prominence for its vibrant cultural tapestry. Situated near the enchanting White Rann, Dhordo is celebrated for its indigenous handicrafts, soulful folk music, and the annual Rann Utsav.

The village has earned the distinguished title of “Best Tourism Village” from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This accolade inspired the theme of Gujarat’s tableau: ‘Dhordo: A Global Icon of Gujarat’s Border Tourism.’

In a social media post, Chief Minister Patel expressed his delight, announcing Gujarat’s tableau as the people’s choice winner at the Republic Day parade in New Delhi. He also disclosed that the tableau secured second place in the judges’ choice category.

Patel emphasized the tableau’s depiction of ‘Dhordo: Global Identity of Gujarat’s Border Tourism,’ showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Kutch. He underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for Dhordo to emerge as a global tourism hotspot, a vision realized through Gujarat’s development initiatives.

The tableau vividly illustrates Gujarat’s essence, featuring a rotating globe symbolizing the state’s geographical location. Atop the globe unfolds the map of Gujarat, highlighting Kachchhi Bhungas (traditional houses), local handicrafts, and Rogan artwork.

The portrayal captures Dhordo’s allure as a vibrant cultural hub and a burgeoning tourist destination. Notably, it depicts a scene where a foreign tourist, dressed in traditional attire, makes a digital payment, reflecting Dhordo’s integration of modern technology.

As the tableau progresses, women adorned in traditional attire partake in Garba, a dance form deeply rooted in Gujarat’s heritage. UNESCO recently recognized Gujarat’s Garba as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, a testament to the state’s rich cultural legacy.

The tableau encapsulates Gujarat’s journey, from its traditional roots to its embrace of modernity, and celebrates Dhordo’s transformation into a global tourism icon. The achievement reflects Gujarat’s commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing progress, inviting visitors worldwide to experience its cultural vibrancy.
