Vijay Diwas 2022: December 16, 1971 – a historic date immortalized for the valor and extraordinary bravery displayed by the Indian armed forces. This day, known as ‘Vijay Diwas,’ stands as a tribute to India’s triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 war. The outcome of this conflict resulted in the liberation of Bangladesh, which was then a part of Pakistan, transforming it into an independent nation.

An enduring symbol of this victory is the iconic image capturing the moment when Lieutenant General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi of the Pakistani Army, stationed in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), conceded defeat. In Dhaka, he signed the ‘Instrument of Surrender’ in the presence of Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of Indian and Bangladesh Forces in the Eastern Theatre. This image remains etched in the collective memory of every Indian.

The 1971 war showcased the collective might of the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy, compelling Pakistan to surrender. The coordinated efforts of these branches of the Indian armed forces played a pivotal role in bringing about this momentous victory. Vijay Diwas serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Indian armed forces and the ultimate triumph of liberty over oppression.

As per official records, a staggering 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered to the Indian Army, marking the largest capitulation of any military force globally since the Second World War. This monumental surrender led to the emergence of a new nation, Bangladesh, formerly known as East Pakistan.

The genesis of the 1971 Indo-Pak War can be traced back to preemptive strikes initiated by the Pakistani side on numerous Indian Air Force (IAF) bases. In response to these unwarranted attacks, the Indian Defence Forces swiftly retaliated on both the Western and Eastern Fronts, engaging in land, sea, and air operations.
