Four decades later, the off-roader finally gets a matte black paint.

During the Japan Mobility Show in November last year, Toyota reintroduced the Land Cruiser 70. For those unfamiliar, this version of the SUV made its debut 40 years ago but is now equipped with modern safety systems like Hill Start Assist Control and Downhill Assist Control, along with a more powerful and efficient engine. To commemorate the model’s 40th anniversary and its market launch in Japan, the automaker is introducing a special one-off off-roader based on the Land Cruiser 70.

Details are currently limited, but Toyota intends to showcase the matte black SUV featured in the gallery during the upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon next week. This special edition is built on the revived 2024 version and incorporates visual enhancements and a few minor hardware upgrades from Toyota Auto Body, a subsidiary of the company dedicated to developing enhancements for Toyota products. It will be interesting to observe whether the modifications showcased on this concept will eventually be offered to customers.

The standout feature of this exclusive vehicle has to be its matte black exterior finish, and that’s not the only distinctive element. The vehicle boasts an additional snorkel, a front bumper with a modified design and winch support, chrome side mirror caps, a roof rack, and other enhancements. The black wheels with a chrome barrel contribute to the rugged off-road appearance, while the clear lenses for the turn signals bring a touch of modernity to the design, reminding us that it’s now 2024. The production model’s fender-mounted mirror remains unchanged.

While there’s no mention of mechanical upgrades under the hood, it’s likely that power is derived from the standard 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine, delivering 201 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The power is transmitted to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox. This one-off model will share the spotlight with a restored Land Cruiser J40 at the Tokyo Auto Salon, scheduled to open its doors to the public on January 13.
